Get the right people around you to succeed – MzVee tells musicians | Business Financial Times Online

After eight years of survival on the music scene in this country, singer/composer MzVee says it is an extremely tough arena and artistes must surround themselves with the right people in order to make meaningful headway.

According to her, unless artistes get together with people who understand the music business and know how to safely navigate the waters, the going will not be as smooth as they wish.

I’m blessed to have a hardworking Business Development Manager who is always looking for creative ways to make money for me. So, I may not be on a show but I’m making money from something else; you just need to be very smart working in music here in Ghana,” she says.

MzVee was speaking last week after the release of her latest single, Baddest Boss. The song, produced by Saszy Afroshii and mixed and mastered by Possigee, features Mugeez of R2Bees fame.

Positive vibes flow when two artistes who respect and admire each other team up for a project, so it’s not surprising MzVee’s new single with Mugeez sizzles with confidence and groove that many are already shaking their bodies to.

MzVee’s view of the music terrain in Ghana at the moment is that because there aren’t solid fundamental structures, such as the calculation and payment of royalties, musicians mostly survive on endorsements, live shows, doing commercials and monetising their social media outlets.

“In other parts of the world, you get paid when your music is played on radio or television. You get paid when you are called for an interview. It’s not like here where everything is basically the musician spending so much money and then waiting for a festive season, or the few times there are shows, to perform and get some money.

“We don’t have shows happening all-year round.  There are a lot of musicians and not all of them can be picked for the shows. It’s a bit tough,” she said.

Baddest Boss is MzVee’s first collabo out this year. She had already brought out two songs in 2020 –  Sheriff and Who Are You – which had her alone on vocals. She, however, wanted to feel a different vibe on Baddest Boss and decided to bring in Mugeez. She said it was exciting to record with him because they are good friends and the work atmosphere was superb.

In this era of COVID-19, MzVee wants her fans to stay safe and keep interacting with her on her social media platforms. She says she has some thrilling stuff up her sleeves between now and end of the year, and the fans will be first to know about them if they stay in touch.

Baddest Boss is available on Apple Music, Sound Cloud, Audiomack, Boom Play and all online platforms.
