Kennedy Agyapong, MP, Assin Central

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has been explaining why the Select Committee in Parliament removed the Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Kennedy Agyapong from the Communications Committee.

According to him, Mr Agyapong, who was the chairman of the Committee, was not supposed to be on the Communications Committee in the first place and so served on the Committee temporarily due to some reasons.

“For Kennedy Agyapong’s move, he wasn’t supposed to be there. We took him there because we felt he was competent in that position as we looked for some other equally competent person. So he was on the Committee as a temporary measure,” he told Accra based Okay FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.

Parliament on Friday approved the report of the Select Committee.

Key among the shake-up was the removal of Mr Agyapong from the Communications Committee.

Mr Agyapong has now been reassigned to chair the Local Government Committee with Suhum MP, Frederick Opare Ansah taking Mr Agyapong’s former role.

The Committee on Education will now be chaired by
Akim Oda MP, William Agyepong Quaitoo, who replaces Deputy Bono Regional Minister,
Siaka Stevens.

Explaining the reason behind the move, the Majority Leader, who is also the MP for Suame, opined that the changes were part of a re-composition of the Select and Standing Committees of the House, to enhance the performance and effectiveness of the Committees of the House.

“We had no malice intended moving Committee members to different Committees. We did that to ensure that performance of the Committees is enhanced,” he stated.

He also rubbished claims that the Assin Central MP was removed from the Communications Committee to ease the tension between him and the Minister of Communication, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

“The removal of Ken has nothing to do with Ursula. If they had any personal issues, it never reflected on the job. They even worked together when he was the chairperson of the Committee and so that could have never been the cause of his removal. He even agreed to that decision,” he clarified.
