Floods Kill 5 In Sekondi -Takoradi

Sekondi-Takoradi,
the capital of the Western Region, witnessed one of the worst floods in recent
years following a downpour on Friday.

The
torrential rains, which lasted for over 10 hours, led to the collapse of houses
and rendered some people homeless.

Five
people died at Ngyiresia in the metropolis due to the torrential rains.

The
deceased, who were siblings, were aged between one and 17.

Their names were given as Auntie Ama, 17, Ama Dekye, 13,
Clement Arhin Jnr. 9, Emmanuel Annan, 7, and Beatrice Amoah, 1.

The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to the Effia Nkwanta
Hospital morgue.

The only survivor, Clement Arhin, 11, is receiving medical treatment
at the hospital.

learnt that portions of the building collapsed on the five
siblings during the downpour.

The
Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, commiserated with the
bereaved family on Saturday.

He
was accompanied by the Western Regional NADMO Coordinator, Mohammed Abdul
Ganiyu.

The
regional minister promised to provide the bereaved family with bags of cement
to help reconstruct the building.

Safohene
Jojoe, a relation of the deceased, explained that the six siblings were
sleeping in a room when the floods caused the building to collapse.

He
emphasized that the building was constructed with concrete blocks.

The regional minister also visited other affected areas to lend support to the flood victims.
