A US-based Lecturer, Prof. Kwaku Asare

Private legal practitioner and US-based Ghanaian Professor at the University of Florida, Kwaku Asare, has urged the government to stop discriminating against people with dual citizenship when it comes to appointments and political participation in Ghana.

Kwaku Azaar, as he is popularly called, says there is the need for the laws of Ghana to be relaxed to cater for people living on dual citizenship.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Prof Asare described the tolerance for people with dual citizenship in Ghana as a way of building and developing the country.

“I will urge president Akufo-Addo to bring Ghana to the rest of the world by bringing a law that allows dual citizenship,” he stated.

“An individual’s possession of dual citizenship does not undermine the allegiance of a person and it is illogical to claim persons with dual citizenship are not patriotic. Who determines who is patriotic,” he quizzed.

According to him, the mere possession of the citizenship of another country is no proof that one cannot serve in Ghana as well.
