The chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo is facing charges of conspiracy to cause harm and assault on some public officers following the contents of a leaked audio recording allegedly containing his voice.
The decision by the Attorney-General, Miss Gloria Akuffo to prosecute Mr Ofosu-Ampofo comes after weeks of investigations by the police Criminal Investigations Department into the leaked secret recording in which Mr Ofosu-Ampofo is alleged to have threatened some public officers.
According to the Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC, Mr Fred Agbenyo, the action against the chairman is a ploy to intimidate the NDC.
“If the agenda is to intimidate NDC then you are joking, we wish the court and the judge well, let’s see how it goes…,” he stated on Peace FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.
Mr Agbenyo further said laws are good to regulate, but it should be noted that political parties are the backbone of governance in Ghana.
“It is good we use the law to work as a country, but let’s not forget that political parties are very important when it comes to Ghana’s governance. I always say the people set up all the institutions in the country, we set up the Police and the Military.
“But, we all know that if any political party decides to be lawless no Police or Military can stop them. If NDC decides to put 10 million people on the street which force can stop them?” he asked.
He added that members of the NDC are very law-abiding citizens which is demonstrated by their chairman going through the procedures and going to court though the leaked tape is doctored.
