MTN Inspects Maternity Block

MTN Ghana Foundation has paid a working visit to the maternity block of the Tema General Hospital to ascertain the impact the new unit is having on maternal health in Tema and its environs.

The Foundation handed over the maternity block to the Hospital’s management a year ago and thus visited to inquire about activities so far after 12 months.

Corporate Service Executive, MTN Ghana, Samuel Koranteng, commended doctors for their good work especially in sustaining the facility.

He noted that the reports they received from the doctors “far exceeded our expectation.”

“We are quite excited that the amount of money that went into this, being Gh¢5.8 million has been fruitful and has impacted women in the Tema area and its environs.”

On maintenance, Mr. Koranteng said before the project was approved, the MTN Ghana Board went through a maintenance conversation with the administration of the hospital where a maintenance committee was instituted and made responsible for the maintenance of not just the building, but the equipment in it.

In an interview with DGN Online, Principal Nursing Officer Joana Boakye, Unit Head Labour Ward, noted that most maternal emergency conditions demand that doctors attend to the pregnant woman within ten minutes or they risk losing the baby.

She disclosed that the facility has gone a long way to improve upon their services especially in reducing maternal and neonatal mortalities.

Bed capacity and equipment in the new block, she said, was higher and better as compared to the previous structure, where a lot of women, including those in emergency conditions, had to sit on benches awaiting their turns to be attended to.

She said with the new facility, even women who come with early labour can get comfortable beds to sleep in till they deliver.
