Former President John Dramani Mahama

Former President John Mahama has won the admiration of many for urging Ghanaians, especially members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to register for the Ghana Card.

The latest is the Chief Executive of the National Identification Authority, Professor Ken Attafuah who chastised those playing politics with the process.

He said the single act of Mr Mahama has increased patronage of the exercise after the NDC initially boycotted the process.

Prof Ken Attafuah

Prof. Attafuah disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem while reacting to concerns by the NDC that some NIA officials are turning away many of their members.

Deputy General Secretary, Peter Boamah Otokunor alleged that the exercise is to help the governing New Patriotic Party rig the 2020 general election.

But Prof. Attafuah said such needless politicisation of a national registration exercise will delay the process.

He conceded that there have been some delays but they were due to technical challenges with the machines being used.

While pleading for support, Prof Attafuah urged the citizens to be “prepared to go through a little bit of fatigue in order to help us build a robust national identification system.”

He said he will promote the prosecution of NIA officials found culpable and recounted that three persons, including a Nigerian posing as a Ghanaian, had been arrested and are standing trial for various infractions.
